With Halloween right around the corner, I thought it would be the perfect time to reflect back on our Halloween 2020 girls’ day – it was the year of COVID, after all, so we were a bit limited!
As most of you remember, we were in lockdown, unable to do much of anything, stuck at home, stuck in a rut and trying to socially distance from our loved ones. The girls and I distanced during the pandemic for a few months and slowly got back to spending our one day a month together – albeit at home instead of out gallivanting 🙂
For October 2020 girls’ day, Julie planned a little Halloween gathering at her place. We were instructed to use the tutus from our 50th birthday celebrations (more on that brainchild of mine later) and turn them into a Halloween costume.

This is what we came up with!
I went as Minnie Mouse! Such a quick and easy costume. Added some white sticky dots to my red tutu, threw on some black tights and a long-sleeved black tee, added the pearls, gloves sunglasses and of course, Minnie ears! What could be easier?

Heidi decided to channel Hello Kitty using her hot pink tutu! She grabbed a Hello Kitty t-shirt, courtesy of Dees Handmade Designs, tossed on some funky pink and black socks and a pair of light-up ears!

Julie made quick work of a bunny costume, by pairing her baby pink tutu with a white shirt, bunny ears and fluffy tail.

Christine went as her favorite – a butterfly. She took her lavender tutu and threw on a flowing butterfly printed sheer cover. The gorgeous butterfly mask finished the effect.

And, who doesn’t love DIY Halloween costumes anyway – so much better than the ones you purchase from the store. Not that I haven’t done that, on occasion! But there is something to be said for the DIY, no?

As I often do, I went ahead with a quick little photo shoot before we all got to looking a bit worse for wear – AKA too damn drunk to have our pics taken 🙂

Jules is the queen of easy, peasy meals! She likes to keep things pretty simple with her concoctions.
So, she fed us dinner – a whimsical salad (with colby cheese cut to look like jack o’lanterns) and served the salad dressing in injectors,

Julie’s very own semi-homemade potato soup using frozen potatoes was the main course and perfect for a fall evening. Not going to lie here, I’d never heard of potato soup using frozen potatoes, so I was a bit apprehensive! But I’m telling you, it was amazing. I highly suggest you give it a try!
Easy Potato Soup

- Onion Flakes To Taste
- Salt & Pepper To Taste
Instructions
- Combine hashbrowns, chicken broth, potato soup and bacon bits in crockpot.
- Cook on low for 4-6 hours or on high for 2-3 hours.
- Add the cream cheese and jack cheese during the last thirty minutes of cooking.
- Garnish with additional bacon bits and serve.
As we generally do on our girls’ days when one of us has a birthday, we celebrated our beautiful Christine’s special day with gifts and cake and love! She snagged a great purple plaid scarf, a pair of OSU Muk Luks perfect for keeping the tootsies warm on game day, a glittery, purple insulated wine bag, a bottle of wine with a custom Bestie label, some cute wine glasses, and some purple leaf dishes.
We all adore the cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes and snag them often for events. Truth is, we go in and snag the cute little ones just to munch on now and again, too. What? I believe Marie Antionette said, “Let them eat cake.” I feel like we’re just following instructions over here!
So, Teeny’s birthday cake was none other than a witch-themed cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes, complete with a cute witch hat and legs sticking out the top of the cake.
Julie also had a craft of making plastic bag wreaths on the agenda! What? Until we got started on this project, I simply couldn’t wrap my head around making wreaths out of plastic bags, but once we got underway, they came together pretty quickly.
It really is a quick and easy craft and would be perfect to do with the kiddos, too. All you really need are a box or two of sandwich baggies, a round metal frame and decorations. You simply tie the plastic bags into knots around the metal frame until it’s full. Tie on ribbon or other adornments and you’ve got yourself a plastic bag wreath. Though we did them for fall, you could certainly do them for any holiday!

As you might expect, we’d been sipping away at the cocktails all evening, and we downed a handful of shots, too! Of course, we continued to drink! A lot! And sing! And dance! I mean, when you’ve done shots and drank Apple Crown and other concoctions you don’t remember, you get a tad bit crazy. At least, we do!

Our evening transitioned into a singing and dancing extravaganza. Sort of! I’m not really sure what you’d actually call this, but we definitely amused ourselves and had fun, so that’s all that really matters. Right? What happens with the besties stays with the besties. Unless one of those besties feels the overwhelming urge to write all about it and share it with everyone! That’d be me 🙂
For your viewing amusement, I’ve went ahead and included a few video snippets of our shenanigans below.
Even though we don’t have the best vocals, we sure gave it our all 🙂 My sincerest apologies to Otis Redding and any and all listeners. On the plus side, we certainly won’t be forming our owning girl group anytime soon!
Well, what can I say about this? We can clap with the best of em’! And rock back and forth with the best of em’. In watching these after the fact, I became acutely aware that none of us can dance like we did in our twenties and thirties – we’ve sadly progressed to the age where we pretty much sway to the music! You’ll notice Julie’s pooch, Sky, was in on the action all night, too.
And this girl and her pronunciation is killing me! I’m not sure if Jules had been saying COVID wrong for all of 2020 or if she was too sloshed to pronounce her ‘V’s, but we certainly learned her views on the pandemic in the video below! If you listen in the background, you’ll hear her youngest correct her 🙂
As much as the girls and I love to go out and experience new things, sometimes it’s nice just to stay in! Of course, we didn’t really have much choice, since there wasn’t much open, but it all worked out just the same.
The truth is, though, it felt good to let off a little steam. It felt good to have a little dance party and at home karaoke with my girls! We ate, we drank and we were certainly merry!
Until next time, make plans with your besties, channel the Quite Simply Us gals or plan your own thing and let us know so we can channel you!
