I don’t know about you, but I pretty much love Halloween! And getting dressed up in my favorite Halloween costume, whether it’s for a party, trick or treat or just passing out candy. There’s something about it that makes me feel like a kid again, ya know? And I’m not gonna lie, I’ve certainly purchased my fair share of ready-to-go, out-of-the-bag costumes before, but there is something to be said about making your own – or at least mostly making your own. Snagging a few key pieces and putting them together to come up with your very own, one-of-a-kind costume that’s always as unique as you are is the way to go as far as I’m concerned. So check out these 30 Easy DIY Halloween Costumes and see if you find something that calls out to you this Halloween.

Last year, the Quite Simply Us gals and I reused existing tutus for our COVID Halloween gathering. All of them required almost no effort and were thrown together in a matter of days.

Halloween Costumes

I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite looks from across the internet this year! I hope some of these will inspire you to create your very own DIY look this Halloween.

Kids

Women

Men

Couples

Family

Best Friends

Kids

My kids are grown and I don’t have grandbabies yet, but there’s something about seeing littles in cute Halloween costumes that just makes me happy. It’s kind of what it’s all about, no?

Scarecrow

I came across this adorable little scarecrow at lauriestutuboutique on Etsy! While you could certainly snag one there, you could also DIY it. Just grab some tulle in various fall shades and make your own halter dress. Add a few fall flowers and cute scarecrow hat and you’ll be all set.

I Love Lucy

I’m definitely showing my age here, but I spotted an oldie but a goodie over at Coolest Homemade Costumes. If you love Lucy, then this sweet little I Love Lucy costume may just fit the bill. Grab a vintage style dress, pearls (of course), and a pair of patent Mary Jane shoes and you’ll be just about there. Of course, the red hair is a total bonus 🙂

Gnome

We all know gnomes are absolutely everywhere these days, so whey not make a cute little gnome costume for your little one. I spotted this charming costume over at Adventure in a Box, and it looks so easy to put together. More than one little? Create your very own garden of gnomes, each with their own unique personality!

Statue of Liberty

How about this quick and easy Statue of Liberty costume from CHEERCRANK. Looks like a pretty easy, peasy costume to create and I bet this would be a one-of-a-kind on your littles’ beggars night. Heck, I might adapt this one for my very own adult costume in the coming years!

Colonel Sanders

How darling and out-of-the-box (errr bucket) is this Colonel Sanders costume I found over at Costume Works? And seriously, you might consider holding off on creating that bucket until beggars night. You’ll have yourself a quick and easy chicken dinner if you do!

Women

I really love dressing up for Halloween and have probably run the gamut of sexy to scary to funny with my costumes throughout the years. The one thing I often have a problem with is narrowing it down to what I really want to do. Truth is, I’ve actually done multiple costumes on a few occasions, depending on what I had going on. Below are a handful of women’s costumes that I thought might be a good fit this year.

Fake News

Want to make the ultimate political statement this year? I found this easy to understand and easy to make idea over at The Spruce.

Mary Poppins

I’m a sucker for the classics, like this Mary Poppins I found over at Merrick’s Art. As an added bonus, there’s a pretty good likelihood that you have most of the items need right in your own closet. Yay us! We’re just always prepared, aren’t we 🙂

Mermaid

How stunning is this mermaid costume from The House that Lars Built? If you’ve really got a hankering to get your DIY on this year, grab those coffee filters and get started. Don’t forget to pull out that crimper, too! It really does add to the overall effect!

It’s Raining Men

If you really want to be surrounded by your own bevy of boys, this It’s Raining Men costume from Studio DIY will probably fit the bill. You’ll find the complete tutorial over there, but honestly it looks like a pretty simple one to put together.

Morton Salt Girl

I’ve been wanting to do this one for quite some time, but haven’t worked my way around to it yet. I just love the Morton Salt Girl from Baubles to Bubbles. So easy to put together with that perfect yellow dress, a pair of white tights, black flats and that iconic clear umbrella. Toss in a can of salt and you’ll be all set.

Men

I always find the Halloween costumes for the guys are a little more difficult to put together. Now, that might just be because my guys aren’t the most enthusiastic costume-wearers in the world. I put together a few men’s selections below that might just work for the guys in your life this year.

The Brawny Man

Honestly, this might be the easiest costume on the list and one that those ‘never want to wear a costume’ guys would be inclined to wear. I found this Brawny Man over at US Green Chamber and my guys have both said they might give this one a shot.

Magic 8 Ball

This Magic 8-Ball costume, courtesy of Best Products, is a quick and easy costume that those finicky guys might actually wear. I’d pair it with an actual Magic 8-Ball for a complete night of interactive fun with the Halloween partygoers.

Twister

This is an oldie, but a goodie! And, depending on the type of party you’re going to, might just provide the slightest bit of raunchy fun. The folks over at Coolest Homemade Costumes provide a full tutorial, but really, it’s pretty self explanatory.

Bud Lightyear

Ever since Toy Story premiered all those years ago, it’s a given that you’re likely to spot at least one Buzz Lightyear every Halloween. I found this grown-up take on Buzz Lightyear over on Pinterest. You may want to start downing those 12-packs now so you have enough boxes to create your costume before the big day.

Error 404

For the guy who insists on not dressing up, I’m betting you can get him into a simple tee-shirt. No? I found this Error 404 Tee over at Etsy and it would be ideal for the stubborn guys in your life.

Couples

The Energizer Bunny

This cute little duo of a costume, from Pinterest, would be quick to make and even cuter to wear. I love costumes where you can just pull staples from your closet and turn them into something so creative!

#Filter/#NoFilter

So, this might be my favorite couple costume this year. I found this over at Costume Works and it really speaks to where we are today as a society. Soooo cute and seriously easy to make. If you can make yourself a sign, you’ve pretty much got this one nailed!

Bob Ross and a Happy Little Tree

Creating Really Fun Things shows step-by-step instructions for creating this nostalgic Bob Ross and a happy little tree costume. And let’s face it, Bob Ross MUST have a happy little tree, right?

Publisher’s Clearing House Winners

I love this Publishers Clearing House costume from Costume Works. This innovative costume requires little effort and you could do this one as a couple or even a group costume, if needed. I mean, pull some clothes from the closet, make yourself a faux check (dammit) and you’ve got yourself a look.

Jack & Coke

What more can I say here? Jack & Coke, people! I spotted this classic over on Pinterest and think it would be such a quick and easy one to pull off. And again, for the guys who scoff at dressing up, this might be perfect. I mean, he probably already has the hat and tee in his closet, if we’re being honest.

Family

I adore seeing the entire family dressed up in cohesive costumes! You know right away that someone has taken considerable time to put something together for their loved ones and that simply makes me a pretty happy camper!

Beekeepers & Their Bees

This sweet little family costume is delightful,, especially if you have little ones. Metro Mom Club shared these fun beekeepers with their little bees. I mean, you’ll notice even the dog has a bee costume on, and who doesn’t want their pets to be included in the family costume extravaganza?

Sesame Street

How sentimental is this Sesame Street family costume I found over at Costume Works? I’m certain you could easily make this or purchase a few things and tweak it to make it your own. Of course, with all of the amazing characters on Sesame Street, this is ideal for a small or large family.

Hungry Hungry Hippos

How absolutely adorable is this Hungry Hungry Hippos getup that I found over at Sugar & Cloth? There’s a complete and easy-to-follow tutorial so you can create your own. Make it a well-rounded evening and by playing the actual game with the kiddos while you’re snacking on all that hard-earned candy.

Circus

I adore this circus themed costume I spotted over @lindsaykristensen on Instagram. The fabulous thing about this set-up is that you could add or delete any other costumes, as needed, depending on the size of your family. Toss in a clown, an elephant, a ringmaster or any other circus performer – I mean, the big tops the limit with this one 🙂

Football Family

If your family loves sports, this adorable football family from blue i style might be perfect for you. What’s even better is that you could completely customize it based on your own favorite sport – basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball, etc.

Best Friends

I couldn’t possibly finish this list up without throwing in some bestie costumes. The Quite Simply Us gals, Heidi, Christine, Julie and I, have certainly dressed up together plenty of times, but we’re always on the hunt for other fun ideas.

The Golden Girls

OMG, I just found the perfect costume for the besties and I over at A Beautiful Mess – the Golden Girls, of course. If you’re looking for a great group costume to enjoy with your friends, this might be the one. Get the gals together and do your best impersonation of Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia! Literally raid the closet, toss on a wig and you’ll be ready to be a friend!

Deck of Cards

I love this versatile Deck of Cards costume I found over on Pinterest. What I love even more is how easy it would be to customize this for your own group. Wear as is, toss on some leggings or black tutus for your own unique look. I mean, 4 white t-shirts, some stencils (or maybe not if you’re crafty enough) and you’re all set. Perfect for any age group of your best gal pals.

Four Seasons

I’m loving this four seasons best friend ensemble I found over on Pinterest. What’s great about this look is that you could really customize it and make it your own. Want to be the sexy seasons gals? Want to be a little more modest? Want to use flowers? Clothing? I mean, this one is wide open, ladies.

Bad Disney Princesses

I came across these bad, bad Disney princesses over on Pinterest and thought they would make a fun costume to put together with the besties. Be sure to include the signs displaying your offense, so everyone knows what you’re in for 🙂

80s Prom

I found these 80s prom gals over at Creating Really Awesome Fun Things and immediately knew I had to to include them on my list. Listen, run to the thrift store, or better yet, raid the back of your closet for that prom dress or bridesmaids dress you know you’re hiding and you’ve got yourself a costume. Don’t forget to pull your hair into the perfect side pony to complete the look. Got some residual scrunchies floating around? Wear those too 🙂
